Pop Culture

The magazine that I possess, displays the epitome of pop culture in my opinion. The title of the magazine is XXL .The sub-title of the magazine id “10 Reasons Why Hip-Hop Ain’t Dead. It glamorizes the life of the rich and the famous; predominately, the African American race. It is filled with pictures of rappers such as Jay-Z , Lil Wayne, the ever so handsome T.I Chingy and other Rappers. When I read the magazine, I find myself wanting to portray some of the images that I see. The expensive cars, the pretty made up weave wearing women; just the overall attitude of the people in the magazine is desired. This magazine is heavily marketed to the African American male. There are pictures of scantily clad women too, what a surprise. The whole tone of the magazine says BLACK. I also find it amusing that this magazine is just like some sort of tabloid because it talks about rumors and rivalries among popular rappers and artists such as the infamous kiss between rappers Lil Wayne and Baby. I thought that some of the comments that the readers left were quite hilarious. All in all, this magazine exhibits what matters most in our American society today. Get money! Money is power and it brings you respect. No matter what way you get your money, does not matter, just as long as you have it. It is simply strongly personified in this magazine.

My Past Writing Experiences.

I have done a lot of writing in my 12 years of schooling. I can say that I have gotten much better each year. I usually like to write my own poetry sometimes. I think that I am a very complex person and I really like to express my thoughts sometimes. However, I do not consider myself to be a creative writer . I’m used to very “militant” writing, structured , outlined writing and a very clear objective. This is the type of writing that I have been exposed to most as well as what I do best. I have written many papers in my academic career. In the 7th and 8th grade , I had an English teacher who I thank to this day. At the time I hated her because her methods were a little extreme ; however, I am the writer I am today because of her. In high school I had an English teacher who was just a joy to be around. She too was a big influence on my ability to articulate my ideas through words. I mostly have written write papers that analyze poems and books and people. I really like to write these papers because I get to use all of the rhetorical devices that I have learned. I did not know that there were so many rhetorical devices that one could use to analyze a paper. The biggest paper that I have ever done was a 16 page paper where I had to propose an issue and argue my point for or against it. I thought that this was going to be a really hard paper but it turned out that I could not stop talking and I actually had too much to say and I had to cut the paper down some. I got an excellent grade on the paper and much praise from the teacher. I realized that I could do a large paper and do it well. Im ready for anything now!

What I Expect Out of this Class

English has not always been one of my most favorite subjects ; however, it has always been one of the the subjects that I have performed well in. In high school , I was placed in Advanced Placement English courses for two years and I got all A's which I am very proud of. We dealt a lot with poetry and literary devices with strange names that are hard to pronounce. I truly enjoy reading and literature as well as poetry but I not always big on writing I guess you could say. I am the type of person who knows how to make a point and make my point very well. I know how to back up my information with amazing support and research evidence/ data. Summery writing is also something that I excel in which can sometimes become a problem. I am also a very good analytical writer, I can examine a piece literature and decipher things that are not usually picked up on as well as finding the theme of a work.I know how to say a lot in a very little amount of space which can sometimes leave me in a bad predicament which then leaves me trying to find ways to draw out a paper because it has to be a certain length. Other issues that I have with my writing is that I tend to be repetitive. I absolutely hate doing introductions to papers because it is so hard to get my ideas flowing in the very beginning and I absolutely hate writing conclusions because I am exhausted by the end of the paper. The body of the paper is where I feel the most comfortable. Sometimes when people read my papers , they think that it is really good but I usually think that it really needs a lot of work. I never seem to be happy with it. Hopefully, this class will help me build my writing skills to where I can feel a lot more confident about my writing. I really want to work on writing styles and word choice, literary and rhetorical devices , and poetry analysis. All in all , I want this class to help me with organizing my thoughts cohesively to make better college level papers that will have all my professors stunned at my eloquent use of the English language. I want professors to walk up to me and say, " Wow, Christen , it was truly a joy to read your paper. I could not put it down . Excellent "A" work. This would truly make my day. I have only used a movie in English one to do an archetypal analysis but I have never used a movie to base an entire class on . This will be very interesting.
